Frequently asked questions

How do I use Command Centre?

Command Centre is your hub for every pillar — tap any tile to open it. Here's what each one does:

Shopping List — Track your main shopping list by store, plus set one-off reminders for things to buy later.

Chores — Assign and schedule household chores, from one-time to recurring, with a clear view of what's due today.

Meal Plan — Plan meals by day and meal type for the week, and push ingredients straight to your Shopping List.

Calendar — See everything with a date in one place — your own events plus read-only mirrors of chores, bills, and more.

Expenses — Log and split shared costs, track running balances, and settle up.

Bills/Payments — Track recurring and one-time bills so nothing's missed, with the option to log a payment as an expense too.

Inventory — Keep a simple stocktake of household items with optional restock reminders.

Care — Schedule pet, kid, elderly, and personal care tasks, and track personal habits.

Checklist — Build reusable checklists from templates, like packing lists, event planning, or a plain to-do list.

Travel — Plan trips with a packing checklist and a day-by-day itinerary.

Memories — Save family milestones and photos to a shared timeline.

Wishlist — Track things you or the household want, with optional achieve-by dates and reminders.

How do I invite someone to my household?

From Household Settings (admin only), share the invite code shown there. It's valid for 24 hours, and you can generate a fresh one anytime.

Why is currency set for the whole household instead of per person?

Splitting expenses and settling up only work if everyone's amounts are in the same currency. Any member can see it; only the admin can change it, in Household Settings.

Can I sign in with Google?

Yes, in the Android app (not on the web version). If you already have an account with the same Gmail address, Google signs you into that same account, so both ways work. If you only ever use Google, you won't have a password; to add one, use Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen.

I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

Tap Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen and enter your email. Open the email on the same phone where you requested it, with Home in Order installed, and tap the link: the app opens so you can choose a new password. For security, the link only works on that phone, can be used only once (opening it on a computer first uses it up), and expires after a while; if it's used or expired, request a new one.

Why does changing my password ask for my current password first?

It's a safety check, so someone with your phone unlocked can't change your password without knowing it. New passwords need at least 8 characters, with a lowercase and an uppercase letter, a number, and a special character.

I signed up but didn't get a confirmation email.

It comes from no-reply@homeinorder.org, so check your spam or promotions folder. Opening the link on your phone takes you back into the app to sign in; opening it on a computer still confirms your email. If you signed up with Google, there's no email to confirm.

How do reminder notifications work?

You'll get a notification for chores, bills and care tasks that are due or overdue, plus any reminder date you've set in Shopping List, Inventory, Wishlist, Checklist or Travel. Reminders arrive from 7:00 am in your own time zone, which the app picks up from your phone automatically. Each item is notified once, not every day. Notifications only work in the phone app, not on the web. Newer phones ask for permission the first time; you can turn reminders off anytime in App Settings.

Why does something keep showing as "Overdue" instead of resetting?

That's deliberate: a missed chore, bill or care task stays flagged rather than quietly rolling forward. To skip catching up one occurrence at a time, use Clear & Resume (next to Snooze) to jump to the current cycle without marking anything done. If a lot has piled up, a Clear & Resume All option appears at the top of the list.

Where did my store go after I bought everything?

A store stays in Today's Trips, marked All bought, for the rest of the day you finish it. After that, you can still open any store's list: tap + Add Item, then View list next to the store.

Why does marking a bill paid offer to add it to Expense Tracker?

So you don't have to enter the same payment twice. It's optional: tap Add to create a household expense with the amount and category filled in, or Skip. It only appears when the bill has an amount set.

How does Settle Up decide who pays whom?

It works out the fewest payments needed to clear every balance at once, so you may not see a direct "you owe them" line for every pair. Confirming settles all unsettled expenses together.

Can I log an expense in a different currency?

Yes. On Add Expense, tap Paid in a different currency? below the amount (shown once your household has a currency set). Enter what you paid in that currency and it's converted at a live exchange rate. Only the converted amount is saved.

Can I make someone else the admin?

Yes. In Household Settings, the admin can tap Make Admin next to a member: you swap roles and both stay in the household. If you want to leave instead, Leave Household asks you to choose the new admin first.

How do I leave a household, or delete one?

Both are in Household Settings. Members can leave anytime; the admin picks a new admin as part of leaving. Deleting the household is only possible once you're its only member, and it permanently removes everything in it, including photos.

Can I switch to a different household?

Only if you're the only member of your current one: in Household Settings, use Join a Different Household with an invite code. This permanently deletes your current household and everything in it. To keep both, sign up with a different account for the new one.

What happens if I leave or get removed from a household?

You lose access to that household's shared data, which stays with the household. If you were removed, you'll see a notice the next time you sign in.

How do I get a copy of my data?

Go to Profile, then About & Support, and tap Download next to Export My Data. You'll get a file with your profile and everything you've created or been assigned, across every part of the app.

What happens to my data if I delete my account?

Delete your account from Profile, then My Profile. Your login and profile are removed straight away. Items you added to a household that still has other members stay for them, with your name taken off. If you're the only member, the whole household is deleted, including photos. If you're the admin and others remain, or you have an unsettled expense balance, the app asks you to sort that out first. You can export your data beforehand, and you can also request deletion by email at homeinorder.org/delete-account.html.

Where can I read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service?
